Arch Design and the City

ARCH 374 | Spring 2017
Associate Professor John Stallmeyer

Description:

This studio focuses on the relationship between buildings, their urban context, and people who inhabit urban settings.  To intervene in the urban setting requires the integration of a complex of criteria and data and the integration of these and multiple scales.  In this studio students will be introduced to methods for urban data collection and analysis, site design constraints and opportunities, including zoning requirements and life safety issues.  At the same time, students will explore the idea of contemporary urban dwelling through the development of a new mixed use infill building that combines live-work spaces at the ground and second levels with more conventional living units above.  A series of lectures introducing methods and criteria relevant to the urban context will augment studio work.
